Meet the expert: Sheree barr

Meet Sheree Barr, Maternity Unit Manager at Moruya Hospital.

Sheree has been involved in the planning of the new Eurobodalla Regional Hospital and is looking forward to moving into the new facility and continuing to support local families with their birthing journeys. We sat down with Sheree to find out more about her work and why she loves living and working in the Eurobodalla.

How have you been involved in the planning for the new maternity unit and Eurobodalla Regional Hospital?

I commenced in this role around 2 years ago and joined the Eurobodalla Regional Hospital project design team meetings. The [Moruya Hospital] midwives and I have had a lot of input into the design and providing consumer feedback and adjustments into the design. [The project team] haven't hesitated to take our feedback and make those adjustments as needed.

What are you and your team most looking forward to?
The team are really excited about moving into a new hospital and a new maternity unit. And we're really looking forward to having large, single birthing rooms, where partners can also stay. It means we'll not have to ask partners to leave in the middle of the night because another woman's come in.

The other thing the team is really excited about is having big bathtubs [in the birthing rooms]. Being able to support women to do water births will be amazing.

What are some the benefits of the new Eurobodalla Regional Hospital maternity unit?

Number one is the ability to have partners stay. Another benefit is the large state-of-the-art bathtubs for water immersion and pain relief. A third benefit will be having access to a private secure courtyard [from the birthing rooms].

What would you say to someone thinking about coming to work for the Eurobodalla health service?
We have amazing, positive birthing outcomes which have been benchmarked against the state. We also have such a lovely small team to work in and we get to know each other really well. And living by the seaside, what more can you ask for?

What’s the best thing about living in the Eurobodalla?
Living and working down here is amazing. We've got excellent beaches and great walking tracks, especially the coastal walking tracks. Living in a rural community, it's nice and small and tight knit, so everybody looks out for each other. As a team, being a small team, we're always looking out for each other's wellbeing, making sure that we're OK as well and try and catch up socially down at the coast is amazing.
